Vilanova: Messi is one-off

October 23, 2012

The Barcelona coach, Tito Vilanova, once again sang the praises of Leo Messi – the author of a hat-trick at the Riazor after the international break - for a great performance which "no other player" is capable of.

With the race for the Ballon d'Or in full flow, the manager assured that Messi is the "favourite" for the award, "not because of the other day", in reference to the game against Deportivo, "but because of his career". "The people who have to vote will vote. I don't want to run a campaign. You see it mentioned every day. The other day he showed his talent. No other player does what he did at the Riazor," said Vilanova in a press conference.

The Argentina captain is four goals shy of the all-time record for the most goals in a season, held by Pelé since 1959. When asked when he would beat it, the Barcelona coach did not wish to deliberate, but acknowledged that his pupil is worthy of all the praise.

"I don't know what else can be said about Leo. We won't see a player like him again. He proved it the other day, travelling away and playing with ten men, he made a constant effort both in attack and defence. Let's enjoy him for as long as we can," said the Barcelona manager.
