Casillas picks Ramos over Ronaldo and Xavi in Ballon d'Or voting

October 23, 2012

Forget Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi, Iker Casillas' nomination for the best player of 2012 is to go to a certain Sergio Ramos. The Spain captain is all set to cast his votes for the Ballon d'Or and, as revealed by Sportyou, his three picks are Ramos, Cristiano and Xavi, in that order. The voting system allows each captain, coach and journalist to award points to three players, with 5 going to their first pick, 3 to the second and 1 to their third choice.

Taking Iker's 5 points will be Ramos, his Real Madrid and Spain teammate, alongside whom he won the 'La Liga' title and Spain's third ever European Championship trophy in 2012. Casillas has chosen to pay tribute to one of his closest allies, the man who helps shield him in the goalmouth in the white of Madrid and the red of 'La Roja' alike.

This is the first time that the goalkeeper has voted for a fellow Spanish player since the new FIFA Ballon d'Or voting system was introduced in 2010. Ramos was a key figure in Spain's successful run to the Euro 2012 title, which represented yet another milestone for Spanish football, and Iker believes the Seville-born defender deserves to be recognised for his role. The centre-back also served up one of the tournament's most iconic moments: a successful Panenka-style penalty in the semi-finals against Portugal.

Last year Casillas' first pick was Cristiano, who has been relegated to second choice for the Madrid captain this time around. Iker's third vote is going to Xavi, who remains one of his best friends, despite the bad blood that has soured the 'Clásicos' in recent years.
