Argentina coach Sabella: We want to follow Messi's example

December 17, 2012

According to national team coach, Alejandro Sabella, Argentina should follow Lionel Messi's example.

"It's been a great year for Argentina, but we want to make sure next year is equally as good, if not better. We want to follow Messi's example as he is always looking to improve," the Argentina coach said in an interview published today in the newspaper El Día from La Plata, a city in the Buenos Aires province.

Sabella also insisted that Messi was synonymous with excellence, claiming: "You can say very bad, bad, average, good, very good, excellent and extraordinary, but Messi is above it all."

When asked about the comparisons between Messi and Maradona, Sabella said: "The comparison with Maradona is unrealistic because we're talking about a sport where everything has changed, physically and tactically, where there is less time to think. It's not realistic."

"Messi has always been very dedicated and gives everything for the national side and Barcelona. The day he got injured in the Champions League he wasn't going to play the next game but in the end he did. I always try to instil values, that's the way I am, and I've been lucky enough to find them in the Argentina team," he said.

The Argentina coach also went on to say that his objective is the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, though he did stress that first they had to get through the qualifying stages. Argentina are currently three points ahead of Ecuador and Colombia (4) and Venezuela, Uruguay and Chile (8).
