Kompany doubtful for Newcastle trip as City captain needs to see specialist

December 13, 2012

Manchester City's captain, Vincent Kompany, will see a specialist about the hamstring injury which forced him out of last Sunday's derby against Manchester United and, having missed training today, he looks very doubtful for Saturday's trip to Newcastle United.

The City manager Roberto Mancini's training session today reflected his concern about a defence which has been vulnerable this season, working personally on their formation and their work as a unit, while the other players undertook a keep-ball exercise. There was also a period of one-on-one training for Mario Balotelli with one of Mancini's coaches after the striker's latest unconvincing display.

James Milner, who is also recovering from a hamstring injury, missed much of the session. Samir Nasri was also missing.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is not a doubt for Sunderland's visit to Old Trafford on Saturday, despite disappointing a crowd of 500 who had gathered for a book signing by him in Manchester. Rooney tweeted: "Not feeling good at all... Sorry to all the fans who were coming". But the player's health is understood not to be a concern ahead of the weekend.
