Leo Messi has another obstacle on the road to claiming the record for goals in a calendar year. On Monday details emerged of the Zambian player Chitalu's 107 goals, and now Flamengo are claiming to have a record of 89 goals by Zico in a year, that being 1979. The Brazilian club are so sure about the feat that next week they will make a request to FIFA to have it recognized.
"Zico scored 89 goals in 1979 and everything that's being said about this is in error. Messi is not the best marksman over a year. I think this is a big mistake and we're going to go to FIFA about it next week. We'll fight our hardest so that this title is recognized", said Bruno Lucena, Flamengo director.
The Rio de Janeiro club will have a bit of a fight on their hands to get FIFA to accept the record, as the statistics on its website feature goals scored in friendly matches. The Flamengo directors are basing their claim on a 50-match unbeaten run that year, which was recognized. A spell that included those friendlies. "They didn't count Zico's goals in friendlies, and that's a mistake. If the friendlies count in our record unbeaten run, the goals have to count too. Between 1978 and 1979 we went more than 50 matches without losing and this record is in the Museum of Football. Zico's goals during that time have to be counted", he said.
