The Barça midfielder, however, did not have his head turned and rejected the offer out of hand, making it clear that although his contract runs out in 2014, albeit with an option for a further two years, his aim is to end his career at the Catalan club.
Presently managed by Dutchman Guus Hiddink, who would love to lure Xavi to Russia, cash-happy Anzhi has previously flexed its financial muscle to bring a number of high-profile names on board.
These include Roberto Carlos, who has since moved into a director of football role, and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, the undoubted star of a side that has had to settle for the Europa League this campaign but is gunning for the big stage of Champions League action in 2013-14.
The Russian club has recently failed in swoops for Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel, the former Benfica powerhouse opted instead to join Anzhi's domestic rival, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Witsel's ex-Benfica teammate, Brazilian-born Spanish forward Rodrigo, who chose to stay put in Portugal.
Anzhi currently lies second in the Russian top flight with 34 points, five points adrift of CSKA Moscow at the top. The two high-flyers are set to square off on 2nd December in Makhachkala, a couple of weeks before the league enters its winter break.
