Radamel Falcao's immediate future lies with Atlético, but since developments in the coming months are unsure, the 'Rojiblancos' are combing the market for a reliable replacement in case the Colombian ends up leaving.
The club's sporting director, José Luis Pérez Caminero, has as many as seven names on his list, with Edinson Cavani sitting in the top slot.
Napoli's Uruguayan striker would be the most popular choice at Atlético, but just this year he renewed his contract with the Italian side until 2017, so his club is in a position to turn down big offers.
Atlético could also substitute the Colombian player who arrived from Porto with another Colombian player currently with Porto, namely Jackson Martinez, who's another option Atlético's top brass are considering. His European performances have come on in leaps and bounds recently.
It's still uncertain if Falcao will actually leave, so this scan of the market is just being performed in case he actually does end up doing so. It's worth noting that, as well as 'El Tigre', the club looked into signing Osvaldo or Rossi when Agüero decided to leave.
And the list of names continues to grow. Alongside those already mentioned, it's worth including two players from the Premiership, Bosnia's Dzeko and the Uruguayan Luis Suárez. And another possibility who could come in on a free transfer is Huntelaar, who has very little left to run on his contract with Schalke 04.
