David Beckham offered to play in Australian League

Football names don't get much bigger than David Beckham and the former England international could be the next superstar to be playing in the A-League.

The ex-Manchester United great is reportedly being offered around to several clubs with the possibility of joining on a 10-game guest stint.

With the Major League Soccer (MLS) competition in America finishing in a fortnight, the timing would work for the 37-year-old LA Galaxy star.

The move, however, is subject to financial backing by Football Federation Australia, with new boss David Gallop to decide whether to support it.

Beckham is the third-highest earner in the MLS at $US4 million ($A3.9 million) per season. In his most recent deal, he accepted a $US1.5 million ($A1.45 million) pay cut from the Galaxy and it is believed money would not be a primary reason for wanting to play in Australia.

He is reportedly happy to receive compensation in the form of lucrative commercial arrangements. Melbourne Victory, however, have no desire in having the football legend among their ranks, with coach Ange Postecoglou welcoming the news of his possible stint but denying any interest.

"That's great if he is. Would we be interested? Nah," he said.

Perth Glory chief executive Paul Kelly, however, said while the club hadn't been contacted by Beckham's people, he'd be happy to consider taking him on.

"I don't know anything about it. I know he's being touted around but there's been no conversation," Kelly said.

"As usual, I'll always say I'm happy to speak to anyone."

Big city clubs like Sydney FC, Western Sydney, Melbourne Heart and possibly Brisbane are considered the most likely destinations for the former Real Madrid playmaker.

Already boasting the likes of Italian star Alessandro Del Piero, Liverpool legend Emile Heskey and Japanese international Shinji Ono, Beckham would be the biggest coup for the league.
