Alexis Sanchez faces one-month injury lay-off

November 16, 2012

Alexis Sánchez is facing roughly a month on the sidelines after spraining his ankle in Chile's friendly against Serbia in Switzerland this Wednesday, his club has revealed. The forward immediately underwent tests after arriving back in Barcelona.

Alexis was substituted just 15 minutes into the match following a rash challenge by Serbia midfielder Luka Milivojevic. With Sánchez clearly struggling, Chile coach Claudio Borghi wasted no time in bringing off the 'Azulgrana' star and giving Angelo Henríquez a senior debut in his place.

According to the Barça medical staff, Alexis has sustained damage to ligaments in his right ankle, meaning he will be out of action for a month or so.

Should the club's prognosis prove accurate, the striker will miss seven or eight FC Barcelona matches. Specifically, the clashes against Zaragoza, Spartak Moscow, Levante, Alavés, Athletic Club, Benfica, Betis and Atlético de Madrid.

In the Chilean's fifteen Barça appearances this season, he has bagged just a solitary goal, against Benfica in the Champions League. Prior to the injury picked up yesterday, he had been forced to sit out the Catalan outfit's last league match against Getafe, owing to a small tear in his left adductor muscle.
