Xavi Hernández is a fundamental player for Barcelona and the Spanish national team but not only for his fluidity or game vision while directing the midfield play. The statistics speak for themselves, making it obvious what both teams rely on the Spanish player's game play.
Xavi controlled the match against Glasgow's Celtic, making a total of 170 passes to his teammates. This fact is significant in itself because, translated into footballing terms, it means that almost all his team's combinations passed under his feet.
The truly important point, however, is regarding the passes that were successfully on target: 165. That is to say that the Catalan only missed five passes; a 97% rate of accuracy.
The 'Azulgrana' player has a great strength - his consistency. It is very difficult to find a game in which Xavi has not been on form or has missed many balls. Even his teammates and opponents say that it is virtually impossible to get the ball away from him.
Xavi's game made significant progress under Rijkaard. He made his debut with Van Gaal but the Dutch coach made him play further back and instructed him not to go forward, and to just pass the ball back. It was Rijkaard who exploited his passing skills, from which the team's game benefited, making him irreplaceable.
He refined his game even more with the arrival of Guardiola and reached a level of excellence which took Barça on to win six titles in a year and Spain to win the World Cup and two European Championships.
