Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is suffering a confidence crisis.
The Belgian defender has delivered some below-par performances for the club, including in the 2-1 loss at Manchester United seven days ago.
Vermaelen, 26, was slammed for making a mistake which led to Robin van Persie’s goal.
Wenger said: “The error of Vermaelen is unwelcome. The big defenders don’t make this kind of errors.”
Vermaelen has taken over the Arsenal captaincy from Van Persie and Wenger believes the new role has been a factor in the player’s dip in form.
He added: “You put more pressure on yourself when you are the captain.
“You want to be the best player in the team. But if you make a mistake then maybe you put a bit more pressure on yourself.
“On Tuesday against Schalke he was outstanding. What has happened to him in recent weeks affected his confidence.”
The signs do not look good for injury-jinxed Abou Diaby who could be out until the New Year.
Wenger said: “It is a muscular thigh problem.”
