Dani Alves rubbishes Messi-Villa bust-up rumours

November 09, 2012

Barcelona right-back Dani Alves has suggested that the dispute between David Villa and Leo Messi on the pitch during the Catalan side's 2-1 defeat to Celtic was invented by the Madrid-based press in order to smear Messi's bid for the Ballon d'Or and boost Cristiano Ronaldo's chances of winning the prestigious award.

"This is the news that sells papers," said Alves in a press conference on Friday. "In stadiums there's always a lot of noise and sometimes you have to shout in order to be heard. But we know where this is coming from. People have been talking about the way Cristinao Ronaldo conducts himself and with the Ballon d'Or coming up, this type of story will sell a lot of papers."

The Brazilian also rejected Cristiano Ronaldo's claims that Leo Messi is considered a better footballer because he has a better public image than the Portuguese.

"Ronaldo is not behind Messi because of how he acts, but because Messi is a better footballer. While Messi continues playing at this level, Cristiano will never win the Ballon d'Or."

He added: "I hope they award the Ballon d'Or to the best player, but they can give it to whoever they want, as far as I'm concerned. Whatever I say about the Ballon d'Or will not sell any newspapers tomorrow."
