Barcelona in no rush to renew Messi's contract, insists Rosell

October 15, 2012

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has stressed that he is in no rush to renew Lionel Messi's contract at Camp Nou.

The Argentine's current deal with the Catalan giants expires in 2016, but the 25-year-old has been vocal in his desire to stay put for longer.

And while Rosell is confident that Messi will get his wish, he does not expect talks between the two parties to start any time soon.

"We are confident that Lionel Messi will remain with us beyond next season," El Periodico.

"It [his contract renewal] could be tomorrow, or next year. His contract runs out in 2016, and it would be irresponsible for us not to extend his contract.

"At Barcelona we do not create controversy, we simply are Barcelona and we're a Catalan club. While we direct the club, we will not be used for politics."

Rosell also reserved special praise for Blaugrana defender Eric Abidal, who is gearing up towards a comeback following a liver transplant earlier this year.

"His recovery is complete, but the capacity to return to competition is very low, according to the doctors. For him to come back as an athlete would be amazing."
