Raúl Albiol, Real Madrid's international defender, has assured that there is a "campaign" against Iker Casillas in order to "remove him from the favourites for the Ballon d'Or". He defended the possibility of a goalkeeper winning the award and assured that "he is still" the number one.
Albiol, in an interview given to the EFE news agency, covered the issues currently affecting Real Madrid and was surprised at the criticism which Casillas has been receiving since the start of the season. He defended his captain and, as for himself, stated that his never-ending patience is running out. Despite renewing his contract over the summer, he is starting to ponder on his future.
"After being number one for many years, everybody wants to undermine him. Iker has been proving that he is the best for a long time and he still is. There are people who want to have a go at him to take him off the top spot. He's not worried. He's still young for a keeper, despite all the years and all the titles he's won," said Albiol.
"Maybe what they were looking for was to remove him from the favourites for the Ballon d'Or. There is a reason behind it when they do these kinds of things. The reason for the campaign they are running is for him to be one less possibility for those who choose the Ballon d'Or," he remarked.
"I'm very happy at Real, but if the boss doesn't give you a second glance, then it's normal for players to think about leaving," admitted Albiol.
