Johan Cruyff's house in Barcelona broken into

October 24, 2012

A group of thieves broke into Johan Cruyff's house in Barcelona on Monday, making off with objects worth a total of €500,000. These included jewellery, pens and gold watches, as well as a number of the trophies the former footballer and Dutch national team manager won during his career.

The thieves are believed to have entered the house, which is situated in Barcelona's Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, by scaling a wall, climbing up a window grille to the second floor and then forcing open the balcony door with a crowbar.

No member of the Cruyff family was home at the time of the burglary, as the Dutch legend is currently away in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he serves as a sporting consultant for Chivas. His daughter was called to the scene in her father's absence.

The burglars ransacked all of the home's wardrobes and drawers, taking any valuable objects they found, in addition to cash. The burglary took place midway through Monday morning and was reported by two elderly neighbours, who alerted the police.

The police force of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan regional government) is currently leading the investigation, although no arrests have yet been made.
