MARTIN O’NEILL has hailed the spirit of Sunderland’s fans and players as they prepare to face Manchester City.
The Stadium of Light was rocking on New Year’s Day when a late Ji Dong-Won goal gave the Black Cats victory over Roberto Mancini’s men.
And O’Neill believes the same welcome awaits the Premier League champions today after more than 1,800 travelling supporters roared Sunderland to a crucial win at Southampton on Saturday.
O’Neill said: “The support was just fantastic. They are desperate for something to happen at some stage or another — but it hasn’t happened for a long, long time.
“The atmosphere against City will be akin to New Year’s Day when we managed to beat them in the last minute. The same result would do nicely.”
