Dynamo Dresden are excluded from the DFB-Pokal for one season

December 11, 2012

German second-division club Dynamo Dresden have been excluded from the DFB-Pokal for one season due to persistent crowd disturbances at their matches.

Dresden will not be allowed to participate in the competition next season after some of their followers lit flares and caused damages at Hannover's Nierdersachsenstadion during the two clubs' DFB-Pokal second-round tie in October.

Hannover have also been fined 70,000 euros for failing to prevent the disturbances.

"The punishment for Dresden boils down to the many previous incidents and the extent of the disturbances at the cup game in Hannover," said the German Football Association's (DFB) sports court judge Hans E. Lorenz.

"Such attacks on stadia are attacks on football in general which require consequential action.

"Last year, we warned them explicitly that they risked being excluded from the competition after incidents in Dortmund."

Around 200 Dresden supporters invaded the pitch at the final whistle of the game, which they lost in a penalty shoot-out, while there were clashes between rival groups of supporters both inside and outside the stadium.

During the match, Dresden fans repeatedly lit flares and threw cups and other items towards the field of play.
