Chelsea line up £70m bid for Napoli duo

December 03, 2012

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will once again dig deep as he funds a £70m move for a Napoli duo he hopes will help to pull his Stamford Bridge side out of an alarming nosedive.

The West London side are ready to fork out a huge offer for Uruguayan international Edinson Cavani and playmaker Marek Hamsik as the Blues look to strengthen a squad that has struggled for form over the past six weeks, poor form that ultimately cost Roberto Di Matteo his job and already threatens the future of interim boss Rafa Benitez after just three fixtures.

Technical director Michael Emanelo and Benitez have discussed possible January targets and the pair are in agreement on the pursuit of the Napoli duo and Abramovich is ready to finance a huge offer, knowing that it will take a lofty bid to persuade the San Paolo side to sell their two prized assets, not least because the Naples side are riding high in second place in the Serie A table.

Chelsea have fallen some ten points off the Premier League title pace and their Champions League ambitions hang by a thread and Abramovich is more than aware that the Blues faithful are not very happy with his decision to axe Di Matteo, therefore he is keen to appease the club’s supporters with significant moves in the January transfer window, one of which may well be the death knell for Spaniard Fernando Torres.

Edinson Cavani has long been a Chelsea target, indeed their interest probably dates back to the encounter between the two teams in the Champions League last term when the former Palermo man netted for Napoli back in February. The 26 year old has been a monumental success since his move to the club back in the summer of 2010, managing 83 goals in 112 matches.

Chelsea also want to nab one of Cavani’s chief suppliers, Slovakian international Hamsik and the offer of €86m (£70m) may be too much for eccentric owner Aurelio De Laurentiis to ignore.

Hamsik is something of a cult hero with the Napoli Tifosi and much like Cavani the attacking midfielder served his Italian apprenticeship at a less fashionable outfit, Brescia, before making the move to join the Partenopei but after six seasons at the club perhaps the former Slovan Bratislava playmaker would be enticed by a move to join Chelsea.

Chelsea may see Marek Hamsik as a like for like long term replacement for veteran Frank Lampard, who appears set to leave the club this summer.
