Atlético Madrid midfielder Emre Belözoglu could face 2 year in prison

December 07, 2012

The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office has called for Atlético de Madrid's Turkish footballer Emre Belözoglu to serve between six months and two years in prison for alleged racist slurs against Ivorian player Didier Zokora, reports Thursday's edition of the Turkish newspaper 'Hürriyet'.

When he played for Fenerbahçe, the player is said to have directed racist insults at the Ivorian Didier Zokora during a game against Trabzonspor played on 15th April.

Emre admitted to having insulted Zokora in English, but assured that there was no racial component. The Turkish Football Federation's disciplinary committee slapped the Fenerbahçe midfielder with a two-game suspension over the insults, but did not state that they were racist in nature.

At the same time, Trabzonspor lodged a legal complaint and today, Thursday, the Public Prosecutor's Office has demanded that the player, now at Atlético de Madrid, serve between six months and two years in prison if the insults are proven to be racist.
