Chelsea could land Drogba on emergency loan deal

November 21, 2012

Chelsea's managerial crisis is hogging the headlines, but the Blues' on field woes could be solved by an emergency loan deal for striker Didier Drogba, according to reports.

Drogba left Stamford Bridge in the summer and joined Chinese top-flight side Shanghei Shenhua, where his nose for goal has remained much in evidence.

In Drogba's absence the bulk of the goalscoring duties at Stamford Bridge were carefully placed on the shoulders of Fernando Torres, only to fall off immediately.

Torres has been enduring an epic spell of miserable form, and with Liverpool-target Daniel Sturridge injured, whoever takes the vacant manager seat at Stamford Bridge after Roberto Di Matteo's departure will start with a genuine striker crisis.

The Press Association reports that Chelsea could fill the void with Drogba, who is currently twiddling his thumbs in the Chinese off-season ahead of his commitments to the African Nations Cup.

As things stand, the Ivorian could theoretically get onboard with the Blues for the whole of December - and the former Chelsea hero has approached FIFA to ask them for special dispensation to arrange a deal outside the transfer window.

A FIFA spokesman has confirmed that an approach has been made to the governing body by the player himself.

FIFA told Press Association Sport in a statement: "We can confirm that the player, Didier Drogba, has submitted a request for authorisation to be registered outside an open registration period for a club on a loan basis.

"Our services are currently looking into the matter."

Given that Chelsea's miserable showing against Juventus was effectively a failed experiment in playing without any strikers at all, the arrival of Drogba would be Christmas come early for Roman Abramovich.
