Arsenal and Liverpool battle for Iker Casillas

April 10, 2013

By Danny Griffiths, Metro's Chief Sports Writer.

Arsenal are considering a summer plunge for out-of-favour Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The Spain international is no longer first choice at the Bernabeu having lost his place to January newcomer Diego Lopez.

Casillas may find his situation changes at the end of the season if manager Jose Mourinho leaves the Champions League quarter-finalists.

But the Gunners are still believed to be excited about the prospect of signing such a dependable, experienced No.1 after troubles this season with and, to a lesser extent, Lukasz Fabianski.

Liverpool are also interested in Casillas, according to sources in Spain, and it is believed he is open to a move to the Premier League.

Arsenal have also been linked with moves for Swansea goalkeeper Michael Vorm and Liverpool shot-stopper Pepe Reina, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger urgently desiring an update at the critical position between the post.

Real Madrid lodge £90 bids for Bale and Aguero

April 09, 2013

Madrid chiefs are looking into the possibility of signing Bale after Gonzalo Higuain yesterday fuelled further speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

The Spanish giants are also interested in bringing former Atletico Madrid ace Aguero back to Spain - and they could offer up to £40million for the Manchester City frontman.

Spanish website fichajes.com claim that Higuain and Karim Benzema could both be on their way out and that president Florentino Perez is keen to find some big-name replacements.

They add that Bale, 23, would set Madrid back €60m (£51.2m) while Aguero would be a "more affordable" €45m (£38.4m).

The Wales international has been in incredible form this season, bagging a remarkable 22 goals, 17 of which have come in the Premier League.

Bale signed for Spurs in 2007 after learning his trade at Southampton.

Aguero, 24, arrived at Manchester City for £38m in July 20011 and netted the goal that won the club the Premier League title last year.

Mourinho rules out Inter return next season

April 04, 2013

The Portuguese coach has made it clear he would be happy to take the reins at San Siro further into the future, while highlighting the impressive form of Diego Lopez

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has ruled out a return to Inter next season - although he admits he would like to take over the Serie A giants in the future.

The 50-year-old lead the Nerazzurri to an historic treble in 2010, and while he insists rumours linking him with a return next year are ill-founded, he maintains a desire to take charge of the club once more.

"Next season, it is certain that I won't return to Inter, but I'd like to go back one day," he was quoted as saying by Marca.

"I speak from my heart, as I did when I said I want to return to England one day. But what is certain is that my next club will not be Inter."

Mourinho added that in-form Diego Lopez is likely to keep his place in the Madrid starting line-up for the upcoming clash with Levante, especially given the number of games he has been able to play compared with returning captain Iker Casillas.

He added: "Diego Lopez has played very well in 13 games in 70 days, Iker's played in none. There's no doubt who is in the best form."

Mourinho losing Real Madrid fans - poll

January 10, 2013

A survey of Real Madrid fans has suggested that supporters may be losing faith in coach Jose Mourinho.

Pro-Real Madrid Spanish sports newspaper Marca surveyed 704 supporters before last Sunday's win against Real Sociedad.

While 54.4% said Mourinho should stay next season, 41.8% said it was time for him to go.

Two-thirds of fans polled said the former Chelsea boss's actions were damaging the club's image.

The supporters gave his performance as coach an average mark of 6.68 out of 10, down from 8.82 in March 2011.

Real are 16 points behind arch-rivals Barcelona in Spain's La Liga.

Former Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan coach Mourinho, 49, was jeered when his name was read out before kick-off against Real Sociedad on Sunday.

The Portuguese angered many supporters after dropping club legend Iker Casillas for the second game in a row.

The goalkeeper's replacement, Antonio Adan, was sent-off after just six minutes of the match.

Mourinho vowed not to leave his post following a 3-2 defeat to Malaga in December, saying: "I'm not worried at all and I'm not going to resign. I'm not a child, I know that results count."

Ronaldo demands fans support

Cristiano Ronaldo has pleaded for Real Madrid supporters to stick together following the latest expression of dissent shown towards Jose Mourinho from the Santiago Bernabeu faithful.

The coach's name was heckled when it was announced prior to Blancos' 4-0, Copa del Rey victory over Celta Vigo, with fans particularly unhappy with Iker Casillas' recent exclusion from the side and their poor Liga form.

While Mourinho was absent at the post-match press conference, Ronaldo - who struck a hat-trick in a superb individual display - called on fans to aid the team's pursuit of trophies by displaying their support in a positive manner.

"We must stand united and we need the fans to support us, there is still a lot to win," he told reporters.

The Portugal international's man-of-the-match display was saluted by Sergio Ramos after the game, though the evening ended on a more sour note for the defender after he was sent off.

"Ronaldo is very motivated, and I can see he is happy," the Spain defender said.

"He deserves his standing ovation and that affection. He's the best in the world."

Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo Copa del Rey Match Report

Cristiano Ronaldo became the seventh highest scorer in Real Madrid's history as they defeated Celta Vigo 4-0 in the second leg of their Copa Del Rey round of 16 clash at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The Portuguese's hat-trick saw him move past Pirri in the club's all-time rankings with 174 goals, as los Blancos overcame a 2-1 first-leg deficit to progress by a 5-2 aggregate scoreline, and set up a quarter final date with Valencia.

Ronaldo opened the scoring with a long-range effort two minutes into the match, and added his second on 24 minutes with a cool finish from close range to seemingly put the hosts in control.

But Celta would come out of their shell in the second half, creating a number of chances as Madrid, dented by Sergio Ramos' 73rd minute red card, were forced to play the latter stages on the back foot.

However, Ronaldo would put nerves around the Bernabeu to rest with his third goal minutes from the end, before Sami Khedira made it 4-0 on the stroke of injury time to finally seal the home side's passage into the next round.

Jose Mourinho restored Iker Casillas to the starting lineup in place of Antonio Adan, with Ramos also returning to the centre of defence to displace Raphael Varane as the partner for Ricardo Carvalho.

And Madrid needed only 90 seconds to eradicate their deficit, as Ronaldo punished a napping Celta defence with a stunning piledriver from outside the box that flew into the far corner.

All the football was being played by the hosts, and it came as no surprise when they doubled their tally with 24 minutes on the clock.

Ronaldo again made the breakthrough, latching onto a fantastic clipped pass from Luka Modric to bury a cool, one-touch finish into the net.

Karim Benzema could have made it 3-0 on the night just before the half-hour mark when he took aim from an unmarked position inside the box, but he could only place his shot within the grasp of Sergio.

And the Celta stopper was called into action again minutes later to stop a goalbound Mesut Ozil shot with his legs, after the German international had initially looked to have rounded the keeper for a tap in.

Sergio was kept busy for the remainder of the half, but came up with a brilliant double save on Karim Benzema from point blank range to keep Celta in the hunt heading into the break.

The visitors were certainly improved in the second-half, and Park Chu Young nearly brought them back into the game after coming within inches of turning home a dangerous cross by Enrique De Lucas, who then tested Casillas with a rasping drive from just inside the box.

Celta were looking increasingly dangerous, and Ramos would ensure a tense ending to the game when he departed with his second yellow card, given after kicking out at Augusto Fernandez, an incident which could have warranted a straight red on its own.

The visitors looked to sieze the initiative, and twice forced the very best out of Casillas with a pair of testing efforts from Michael Krohn-Dehli and Agusto Fernandez in the last ten minutes.

But Ronaldo would finally end Celta's brave challenge in the 88th minute after clinically finishing off a counterattack, before Khedira rounded off matters at the death with a deft shot after manouvering into space inside the area.

Madrid will now ready themselves for a quarter-final clash against Liga rivals Valencia, with the first leg set to take place at the Bernabeu on January 15.

Barcelona boss Vilanova to be absent for Copa del Rey clash with Cordoba

January 09, 2013

Barcelona will have to make do without the services of Tito Vilanova for Thursday's Copa del Rey match at home against Cordoba as the 44-year-old is to undergo medical tests, assistant coach Jordi Roura has confirmed.

The 44-year-old recently returned to the Blaugrana bench after undergoing surgery on a tumour back in December, but his place will be taken by his number two again for this week's cup match.

"Tito will not attend Thursday's encounter at Camp Nou. He had to leave for a series of medical tests and will not be available," he said at a press conference.

The Barcelona caretaker boss then went on to praise David Villa, saying that the experienced striker no longer needs to prove himself as he has already proven his worth over the years.

"I wouldn't say that the Copa del Rey match is a chance for Villa to prove himself. He does not need to prove himself," he continued.

"We all know that he is an extraordinary player. He always works hard and is still very important for Barcelona."

Barcelona won the first leg of the round of 16 match against Cordoba 2-0.

Negredo open to Premier League move

Alvaro Negredo has alerted Premier League clubs by expressing a desire to leave Sevilla and move to England.

Negredo has been targeted by Tottenham and Chelsea and although his club are demanding about £18million for the Spain forward, Sevilla’s financial difficulties mean he could be captured for less.

Both Spurs and Arsenal are seeking to improve their quality in attack and Negredo admitted that if he decides to move abroad, his first choice is the Premier League.

“The Premier League is a great competition, I really like it and I think my style of football would be well-suited to it,” he said.

“There comes a time when a cycle comes to an end and I don’t know whether my time will be sooner or later. I haven’t thought about it a lot but I wouldn’t mind playing abroad.”

Negredo revealed he had discussed the life of a footballer in England with some of his international colleagues.

David Silva, Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla and Fernando Torres all chose to leave La Liga for the Premier League.

“I’ve spoken to the guys playing in England, mainly when we were together at Euro 2012 because we had a lot of free time,” Negredo said.

“I spoke to Mata and Torres and I know they really enjoy it.

“They have a different way of experiencing football over there compared with Spain. The players say it is easier to go out and about there. Here, it is quite difficult to leave the house but they say there is not as much scrutiny in England, and I like that.”

Negredo was sought by Spurs in January 2011, when chairman Daniel Levy made inquiries about a number of Spain-based strikers as the transfer deadline approached.

Manchester United enter race to sign Leo Baptistao

Manchester United have reportedly joined the race to sign Rayo Vallecano starlet Leo Baptistao, however Atletico Madrid remains the most likely destination for the player, who has notched six goals and five assists already in his debut Primera Division season.

According to AS, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson attended Rayo's 3-1 win over Getafe on Monday to take a closer look at Leo, 20.

Representatives from Liverpool, QPR, Leeds, and Brighton were also spotted at the game, in which the Brazilian attacker again impressed with a superb all-round performance which included the assist for his side's third goal.

However, Leo's English suitors could be set for disappointment, as Spanish radio station Cadena Cope reported last week that Atletico had already reached a €6 million agreement to sign the player in the summer.

Leo joined Rayo's youth set-up in 2008, aged just 16, after coming to prominence playing indoor football in Brazil alongside boyhood friend Neymar.

His development in Madrid was set back by hepatitis and two serious collarbone injuries, so he only made his first-team debut at Real Betis in August, when he announced his arrival with a goal and an assist.

His form since has been a revelation, indirectly filling the gap left by current Swansea sensation Michu, who scored 17 times for the Vallecas club last season before leaving for Wales for just €2.5 million in the summer.

Rayo are said to be keen not to let Leo leave for such a low fee and AS say his contract, which ends in 2015, contains an €8 million release clause.

Ter Stegen dismisses Real Madrid link

Borussia Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen feels flattered by rumours linking him to Real Madrid, but is not considering a move, he has told Rheinische Presse.

Recent reports in the Spanish media had linked the Gladbach shot-stopper with a move to the Spanish champions, but speaking to the press during the club’s winter training camp Ter Stegen, 20, has played down the speculation.

“It flatters me when my name is discussed, when those rumours emerge,” he said.

But Ter Stegen, who made his debut for Germany in a 3-5 defeat to Switzerland ahead of Euro 2012 and has so far won two caps for his country, claimed nothing could lure him away from Gladbach right now.

“I still have a job to do at Gladbach,” he continued. “Other offers are quite out of the question. I want to do my homework here and want to show myself here.”

Ter Stegen had been going through ups and downs during the first half of the season. After saving a Messi penalty with his first touch in the Germany friendly against Argentina in August, his form dropped.

“Of course, I get annoyed by mistakes and bad scenes,” he said. “But after I have analysed it, I try not to think about it anymore. Many things came together. I am glad, I stayed calm and now I can see I don’t have to doubt myself.”
