AFC Asian Cup 2007 champions Iraq started their Gulf Cup 2013 campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Frank Rijkaard’s Saudi Arabia.
In the match played at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium on Sunday, former Arbil defender Salam Shaker put Iraq 1-0 up in the 18th minute.
Al Ahli defender Osama Haousawi found his own net in the 72nd minute as newly appointed Iraq head coach Hakeem Shakir started his job with an impressive win.
These two sides will meet during the AFC Asian Cup 2015 qualifiers starting next month as they will be joined by China and Indonesia in Group C qualifications.
In their opening match of the AFC Asian Cup 2015 qualifiers, Iraq will host Indonesia on 6 February while Saudi entertain China at the Prince Mohammed Bin Fahad Stadium on the same day.
