Valencia president Manuel Llorente: Gago hasn't told me he wants to leave

December 04, 2012

Valencia president Manuel Llorente has declared that Ernesto Valverde was his first choice to be the new coach of 'Los Ché' after Mauricio Pellegrino was sacked on Saturday.

"Valverde was the first coach we spoke to. We spoke with him in Zaragoza and we were impressed with his vision for the club," revealed Llorente during the presentation of the new coach at a press conference on Monday.

"We want things to improve. We have to start a productive new era with Ernesto and do things better than we have done until now. I wish him all the best because his success will be ours."

It has been reported that midfielder Fernando Gago declared he wanted to leave the club once he found out that Pellegrino had been sacked, something which Llorente did not confirm nor deny.

"Gago has not told me wants to leave in the past 24 hours. When Pellegrino was fired he was one of the angriest players but what he said should stay in the dressing room. At no moment did I ever interpret it as him wanting to leave the club. He was definitely angry and affected by the news, as were other players.

"If anyone does want to leave, the door is open, but if both sides are willing, we will carry on as before."

The president also justified the decision to sack Pellegrino, who said that his sacking was "unfair and the product of a sudden outburst of frustration".

"Why was there so much frustration? Because the team lost in Málaga [4-0] and to Real Sociedad [2-5]. I respect Mauricio, but you have to look at how the team lost. We couldn't carry on like this. We were hoping for a different reaction last Saturday. It wasn't a rash decision, I was relaxed. I consulted the board and we made the decision. We don't like taking decisions like this but that is what we have done. Today I'm presenting a new coach because the team has failed. This is no celebration."
