The draw which took place on Friday was widely acknowledged as one of the best in recent years, with Manchester United taking on former star Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid, Arsenal facing German giants Bayern Munich and Celtic earning an exciting fixture against Juventus in just a few of the fascinating pairings.
But the real magic came in the draw process, as all eight ties turned out to be identical to Thursday’s rehearsal.
The odds for this to happen are amazing – punters could have scooped five-figure winnings for just a £2 wager – given that the 16 teams were all picked at random with very few restrictions.
Naturally, the coincidence has sparked the usual conspiracy theories that Uefa staged the event. One Twitter user remarked: ‘We’ve found them out! Conspiracy theory against Uefa!’ while others were simply left dumbfounded.

However, the governing body remains adamant that their fail-safe measures to ensure a fair draw at all times means such a fix isn’t at all possible. Crafty Steve McManaman, who drew United’s ball opposite Spanish champions Real, has always been a bit of a magician though – and he’s a former Liverpool boy, too…
