QPR boss Redknapp plans shock move for Manchester United defender Ferdinand

December 20, 2012

QPR boss Harry Redknapp wants Manchester United Rio Ferdinand veteran to inspire the club to Premier League safety and is lining-up a January bid for the centre-half.

Ferdinand’s brother, Anton, is already at QPR and Redknapp believes he can convince the 34-year-old to leave Old Trafford and return to London next month.

The former England international is in the final year of his contract in Manchester and faces an uncertain future with the Premier League leaders.

Ferdinand has been a regular at the back for the Red Devils this term but the return of captain Nemanja Vidic and Phil Jones to fitness is likely to see the former West Ham stopper drop to the bench.

Redknapp is a huge admirer of Ferdinand and tried to sign the defender in summer 2011 when he was in charge of Tottenham.

The 65-year-old, who guided the Hoops to their first win of the season against Fulham on Saturday, has money to spend in January and will approach United boss Sir Alex Ferguson about signing the defender, who cost £33m from Leeds United in 2002.

The R’s remain in the bottom three and five points from safety but Redknapp is unbeaten in four matches as boss and targeting experienced stars in January to help add some know-how to his struggling team.

Ferdinand could line-up alongside side his brother at centre-half should he join, but Redknapp is also eyeing Spurs stopper Michael Dawson.
