Manchester City's Gareth Barry accepts FA charge

December 13, 2012

Barry will not appeal against the FA’s disciplinary action after consulting manager Roberto Mancini and City officials on Wednesday and will receive a one-match ban and a fine of £8,000.

The England international was found to have used “abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official” towards the end of last Sunday’s stormy derby with Manchester United.

Clattenburg, who was the fourth official at the Etihad, only returned to refereeing duties earlier this month after almost four weeks out following accusations of racism by Chelsea and, though he was later cleared, City are reluctant to increase the scrutiny on him by submitting an appeal.

Barry has until 4pm on Thursday to respond but is not prepared to risk the ban being extended if found guilty after a personal hearing. The midfielder is understood to have been left bemused by the charge but considers an appeal to be ultimately pointless.
