Iraq’s caretaker coach Hakeem Shakir has been promoted as head coach of the national team, the Iraq FA announced on Friday.
Shakir, who had a brilliant spell as a U-19 coach after guiding the Iraq team in the final of the AFC U-19 Championship 2012 in the UAE, was given a caretaker role after Brazilian Zico resigned in late November.
The 49-year old coach also guided Iraq into the final of the WAFF Championship 2012 which they lost to Syria.
The first task at the helm of the national team for Shakir, who also led the team to the qualifications of the inaugural AFC U-22 Championship as Group A leaders, will be the Gulf Cup 2013 starting in Bahrain from next week.
