In the midst of the debate surrounding the legitimacy of Lionel Messi's goals record, The Guinness Book of Records has recognised the Argentine as the top scorer in a calendar year in official matches. The prestigious organization that registers all types of records in any category notes that the Barça player has beaten the previous holder of the record, Gerd Müller.
Messi's tally hasn't been registered as he still has two more matches to play before the end of the year, but Guinness announced on its website that Messi claimed the new record when he scored his 86th goal of 2012 against Betis in the Liga last weekend. At the moment the record is at 88 goals, after the two he added against Córdoba in the Copa. Few would bet against the number rising.
