Gomes' wage is too high for Palmeiras

December 09, 2012

The Palmeiras president Arnaldo Tirone has claimed that Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was close to a move to the Brazilian club, only for the deal to break down due to his excessive wage demands.

Gomes has failed to feature in a single game for Spurs this season, having last played for the club in a Europa League outing in November 2011.

Brazilian outfit Palmeiras offered the goalkeeper a way out but Tirone claims that negotiations were impossible due to his salary.

"Gomes was offered to us but the negotations didn't work out," he told Lancenet, a Brazilian football website. "His salary is very high."

The president of Alviverde, as they are known in Brazil, likened the situation to his attempts to sign another Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who joined QPR in the summer.

"It's similar to what happened regarding Julio Cesar."

Gomes spoke about his disillusionment under Harry Redknapp last season, but he has slipped down the pecking order under new boss Andre Villas-Boas with the summer acquisition of Hugo Lloris.
