Mourinho has made 37 half-time changes since taking charge at Real Madrid

November 09, 2012

Mourinho is making a habit out of something very unusual, which is making changes at halftime. Since he took over at Real Madrid he's made 37 substitutions at the break, the latest of which were against Dortmund. He took Higuaín – injured – and Modric off, and brought on Callejón and Essien.

Mou doesn't look at his watch when he doesn't like something. Halftime has become a good time to make changes if they are needed. He’s done it nine times this season, although twice he was forced to due to injuries.

Callejón, Higuaín, Álex Fernández, Kaká and Özil – twice - have been substituted at halftime. It’s happened to the German against both Sevilla and Deportivo de La Coruña.

Twice, Mourinho has even made all three changes at the break, most notably in last season's Spanish Cup game against Malaga. Pellegrini's men were winning 2-0 at the break. Mou brought on Özil, Khedira and Benzema, taking off Callejón, Kaká and Arbeloa. Rejuvenated by the changes, Real Madrid came back to win 3-2.

He also made all three changes at the break against Dinamo Zagreb.

However, Mou's record for the quickest tactical change took place last season during Real Madrid's game against Villarreal: he substituted Lass in the 28th minute for Callejón.
