The latest mythical milestone achieved by Messi is to surpass the mighty Pele for goals scored in a calendar year. The Argentine Ace's brace against Mallorca took him past the Brazilian's best ever haul. But Messi isn't resting on his laurels and he's close to achieving another seven historical targets. Players such as Di Stéfano, Gerd Müller or Maradona may also see their personal bests bettered by the diminutive Argentine.
1. Messi is nine goals away from Gerd Müller, who scored 85 with Bayern and Germany over 60 games during a calendar year.
2. In March, Messi beat César's record as Barcelona's top scorer in all competitions. And now he's just eight away from the 192 that César notched up over 13 league campaigns.
3. Eusebio, Müller, Jardel, Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi himself have all won two Golden Boots. If Messi wins it again he'll be the only one to have collected three.
4. Messi has scored 16 goals in the 'Clásico' games against Real Madrid. Only Di Stéfano has scored more in this historical fixture, with 18. However, Messi has the highest goals to games ratio in the fixture (0.77), even beating Di Stéfano, Raúl and César.
5. Vivian Woodward, formerly of Tottenham and Chelsea, scored 25 goals in international competitions with his club and country in 1909. Messi has already notched up 23 this season.
6. Leo could also become the first ever player to be the top scorer in the Champions League for five consecutive seasons.
7. Messi is just three goals away from reaching Maradona's total for Argentina. He's scored 31 goals in 75 games, compared to the 34 that Diego scored in 91 appearances.
