Messi scores more goals than 14 out of 20 La Liga clubs

The extraordinary should never cease to amaze us, yet it has. Messi has made a habit of doing the extraordinary. A decade ago, two goals and an assist – as achieved by 'La Pulga' against Zaragoza – would have been considered an outstanding performance, brilliant, as well as infrequent. Now, it's just another habit, like a mid-morning coffee. If Messi plays, good football is guaranteed.

The numbers don't lie. Lionel Messi has 17 league goals to his name this season. To compare him with two of the best players in the world, he's scored five more goals than Cristiano and seven more than Falcao.

The importance of Messi's 17 goals becomes more apparent when considering that of the 20 teams in the first division, only five of them have scored more goals than him: Barça (39), Real Madrid (32), Atlético (24), Deportivo (18) and Betis (18). Athletic Club de Bilbao’s players have scored the same number of goals as the Argentine (17).

In the other fourteen teams that play in what is considered the best league in the world, the sum of their players have scored fewer goals that the Argentine superstar. For example, Zaragoza, the most recent victim of Barcelona's ruthless playing style, has scored a total of 14 goals. Manolo Jiménez, the Zaragoza coach, knows exactly what happened: "The game was won by the team that had Messi and that was them".
