Dynamo Kiev 0-2 Paris Saint-Germain Champions League Match Report

November 22, 2012

Paris Saint-Germain booked their passage through to the last 16 of the Champions League thanks to a routine 2-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine.

Ezequiel Lavezzi, who had not previously scored for les Parisiens, grabbed both of the goals for Carlo Ancelotti’s men. The first arrived on the stroke of half-time and was largely due to an excellent pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, though the ex-Napoli star’s finish was also of the highest order.

After the break, Lavezzi, who joined PSG from Napoli during the summer, put the game out of the hosts' reach with a tap-in following a horrendous defensive lapse.

Dynamo dominated the first half, but aside from a 10-minute spell around the middle of the opening period they rarely managed to test Salvatore Sirigu. Indeed, the best chance of the opening stages fell the way of Alex, yet he headed off target when left unmarked.

A Miguel Veloso free kick that flew just wide of target was the sign for the Ukrainians to step up their assault on the visiting goal, with captain Oleh Husyev very much to the fore. The midfielder saw a header brilliantly saved by Sirigu, and Denys Garmash slashed his follow-up wide when he really should have scored.

This was to prove to be the hosts’ best moment, and their profligacy was punished on the stroke of half-time when a break orchestrated by Ibrahimovic was expertly finished by Lavezzi.

Oleg Blokhin’s side started the second period with purpose. Haruna Lukman had a well-struck shot from range, but it proved a routine hold for Sirigu, and at the other end of the field the hosts were about to be punished for a criminal lapse.

Yevhen Khacheridi was hopelessly short with a back pass under only moderate pressure, and Blaise Matuidi leapt on the error to square for Lavezzi, who was left with a simple finish.

Although the fight was not out of the hosts, Sirigu was in such form that they would not heave their way back into contention. The Italy international made a marvellous save from a Dudu shot that seemed destined to loop over him and into the net, while he was also alert enough to stop any other threatening moments.

PSG have set up a Group A decider in a fortnight against Porto at the Parc des Princes, in which three points will be enough to secure top spot, while the best the Ukrainians can now aspire to is the Europa League.
