The newly appointed Blues boss ran the rule over his inherited squad yesterday afternoon, and is now in the process of formulating a squad reshuffle plan for the new year.
Florent Malouda, Paulo Ferreira and Hilario are set to be among those culled, while decisions over contract renewals for Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole are yet to be taken.
However, the biggest news is set to relate to new arrivals, with Benitez keen to secure at least £60million in funding to bring in Atletico Madrid hitman Falcao and German flyer Schurrle.
The duo are among two of the most highly rated forwards in world football, and Benitez is desperate to land the pair to pep up the struggling Chelsea attack.
Colombian marksman Falcao, who is also a target for Manchester City, has long been admired by Chelsea scouts for his scoring prowess, but is likely to cost in excess of £40million.
Elsewhere, versatile German Schurrle has twice come close to sealing a transfer to Stamford Bridge, but Bayer Leverkusen’s £20million price tag has put them off.
Benitez is ready to demand both players at a meeting with Roman Abramovich next week, in what will be the first time they have met.
