Andriy Shevchenko offered Ukraine job

November 13, 2012

Andriy Shevchenko has been offered the chance to become Ukraine's new manager.

The 36-year-old retired from football after Euro 2012 in July and had previously spoken of his desire to go into politics.

But Ukraine's football federation (FFU) want the the 36-year-old replace Oleh Blokhin, who has joined Dynamo Kiev.

"FFU president Anatoliy Konkov has decided to invite Andriy Shevchenko to take the head coach post," a statement read on the federation's website.

The former AC Milan and Chelsea frontman is the top goal scorer in the country's history, scoring 56 goals in 111 appearances, and has also captained his country 56 times.

Ukraine are in the same World Cup qualifying group as England but, despite a 1-1 draw at Wembley, they face a battle to reach Brazil in 2014 following a defeat by Montenegro and a draw with Moldova left them second from bottom in Group H.

Konkov insists the absence of any previous coaching experience would not stop him being a success, pointing to the three Spanish titles and two Champions League successes enjoyed by Pep Guardiola at Barcelona despite little experience in management.

The president of the federation said: "Remember - Pep Guardiola achieved incredible results in a few years. I'm sure Shevchenko also be able to conquer great football countries as head coach of this country.

"He has enough experience and character. The federation, in turn, will ensure to give him all the help he needs with the national team."

  1. Everyone who go to Ukraine should be aware about transfers in this country. There are several airports, cheap trains and buses. You also may use taxi or hire a car http://ukraine-vacation-guide.com/index/transfer_in_ukraine/0-106 But car rental is not developed enough there and it is better to book a car in advance. Transfers is definitely not the best feature of Ukraine travelling, but there are a lot of advantages in visiting this country.
