England captain Steven Gerrard cleared to face Swede

November 13, 2012

England captain Steven Gerrard has been cleared to travel with the rest of Roy Hodgson's squad to Sweden for Wednesday's friendly.

The 32-year-old Liverpool midfielder underwent a precautionary scan on a knee injury suffered in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

If Gerrard plays in Stockholm he will become the sixth Englishman to reach a century of caps.

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha has won his first England call-up.

The 20-year-old earned his place after the withdrawal of five players from the squad. He is the first Championship outfield player to be called up since Jay Bothroyd in 2010.

Arsenal's Carl Jenkinson and Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone are also in the squad for the friendly.

Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott, Jonjo Shelvey, Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon have all been ruled out.

Billy Wright, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, record holder Peter Shilton and David Beckham are the other England players to win 100 or more caps.

Injured left-back Ashley Cole is currently alongside Gerrard on 99 appearances.
