Manchester United tell Nani: Concentrate on football, not contract
September 11, 2012
United are said to have told the Portugal midfielder to stop his public bleating over his contract dispute with the club.
Nani has two years left on his current deal, but contract talks with United have broken down over his excessive wage demands.
United tried to offload Nani to Zenit St Petersburg in the summer transfer window, but a deal never materialised.
Nani has made no secret of his anger at what he perceives to be his mistreatment by United over his contract situation.
United, in turn, have been angered by claims that Nani intends to run down his contract and leave for free when it expires, unless he gets a new deal.
The club are understood to have had enough of the 26-year-old complaining and told the winger to shut up and concentrate on playing football.
Nani was left out of United's squad for the 3-2 win over Fulham on August 25 as they tried to offload the Portuguese.
But with no deal able to be brokered, Nani remains at United, although in an increasingly isolated position within the squad.
United will have another go to moving the player on when the transfer window re-opens in January, to try to recoup cash after spending £50million this summer.
Nani joined United for £20m from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 and has since made 197 appearances, scoring 36 goals.
