Gago: Argentina must do more than just to play the ball to Messi
September 10, 2012
Argentina international Fernando Gago has admitted his nation rely too heavily on Barcelona star Lionel Messi and must build on other aspects of their game.
The pair played starring roles in Albiceleste's 3-1 win over Paraguay on Friday night in which Messi helped himself to his 28th international goal in 72 outings.
"We are comfortable and we are getting results, but we cannot think beyond Peru, then Uruguay," the midfielder told Clarín. "The qualifiers are difficult, and our first hope is to reach the 2014 World Cup with a ticket in our hands, then we will see."
And on his nation's reliance on Messi, Gago outlined the need to develop several styles of play.
"Having Lionel is a bonus, but Argentina cannot play the ball only to Messi," he continued.
