UAE into Gulf Cup semis after Bahrain victory

Majed Hassan grabbed a winner five minutes from time as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) progressed into the semi-final of the ongoing Gulf Cup 2013 with a hard-fought 2-1 win over host Bahrain on Tuesday.


The 21-year old striker cancelled out Abdulwahab Al Malood 75th minute equalizer for the host after UAE took the lead in the 40th minute through Al Jazira forward Ali Mabkhout at the Bahrain National Stadium.

With the win, coach Mahdi Ali will have the luxury to rest few key players in their next match Oman as the UAE are already through to the semi-final having accumulated six points from two matches.

Qatar, who defeated Oman 2-1 are at the second position while Bahrain and Oman have a point each in Group A.

UAE are up against Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Hong Kong in Group E of the AFC Asian Cup 2015 qualifiers.

They will make a long trip to Vietnam to start their qualifying campaign on 6 February, 2013.

Likewise, Bahrain will face West Asian neighbours Qatar and Yemen in Group D alongside with Malaysia. They play their first match against Yemen.
