Special Video: Harry Redknapp defended Frank Lampard in front of angry West Ham fans in 1996

January 07, 2013

Us football fans really think we know it all, right? So and so's useless. What'shisface couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo. Thingamyjig's only in the team cos his uncle's the manager. Ad infinitum.

That was certainly the overriding vibe at this meeting in 1996 when some West Ham fans took their then manager to task for perceived favouritism towards his nephew Frank Lampard.

As the 18 year-old midfielder looked on, the fans accused Redknapp of nepotism and compared Lampard unfavourably to released team-mate Scott Canham.

Redknapp replied - in remarkably calm fashion, it must be said - that he was employed to make judgements about players - and his judgement was that Lampard was a far superior player to Canham.

"I’m telling you now, and I didn’t want to say this in front of him, but he will go right to the very top," said the manager of his nephew.

And, of course, history has proved Redknapp right. Lampard went on to win countless trophies with Chelsea and become a mainstay in England's midfield.

Canham, on the other hand, saw out his playing days at Thurrock and is now the assistant manager of Isthmian League side Aveley FC.

Maybe we should give managers a little more credit, eh?

Watch the full - and frank - encounter below.
