Saturday's La Liga Round-up

January 06, 2013

Levante continued their pursuit of the UEFA Champions League places in La Liga with a win over Athletic Bilbao, while a late defeat at Sevilla sent Osasuna to the bottom of the table.

Elsewhere, Deportivo La Coruna returned to winning ways by upsetting Malaga, and Valencia were too strong for 10-man Granada.

Levante moved back to within a point of the top four as they came from behind to beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at the Ciutat de Valencia.

Aritz Aduriz had given the visitors a seventh minute lead but Levante were level 20 minutes later thanks to a thunderous strike from Christian Lell.

Athletic were then reduced to 10 men just before half-time when Aymeric Laporte was shown a straight red card.

Levante made their man advantage count almost immediately as Vicente Iborra gave the hosts a 2-1 lead at the interval.

And Juan Ignacio Martinez's men made sure of all three points 20 minutes from time when former Liverpool winger Nabil El-Zhar made it three.

Osasuna had looked set to take at least a point to move out of the relegation zone but a late 1-0 defeat at Sevilla saw them sink to the foot of the table.

Emir Spahic's goal seven minutes from the final whistle did the damage at Estadio Ramon Sanchez in Saturday's late kick-off.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina centre-back turned in Jose Antonio Reyes' knockdown header from a corner to give Sevilla the win and move the hosts up to 12th place.

Deportivo secured their first win since early November in Domingos Paciencia's first game in charge thanks to a wonderful individual goal by Pizzi against high-flying Malaga.

The Portuguese winger had looked the most likely to create danger and, in the 57th minute, he turned Martin Demichelis before rocketing a shot high past Willy Caballero.

Second-half goals from Jonas and Pablo Piatti helped Valencia recover from a goal down to beat 10-man Granada 2-1 at Nuevo Los Carmenes.

The hosts had to play for almost an hour with a man less after Mikel Rico was sent off before half-time but they still took the lead in the 49th minute through substitute Brayan Angulo.

Jonas, though, equalised nine minutes later and Piatti scored an 82nd minute winner.
