PSG president backs Ancelotti and Leonardo

January 04, 2013

Paris St Germain president Nasser Al Khelaifi says the club have learned from their mistakes and that he has a strong relationship with coach Carlo Ancelotti and sporting director Leonardo.

The big-spending capital club finished 2012 top of Ligue 1 after four straight wins and came through their Champions League group after winning five of their six games.

Despite those successes, their first half of the season has not always been plain sailing.

They started slowly, with draws in their first three league games, while disciplinary issues have also marred the campaign.

Star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off after a lunge at St Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier and will face a league disciplinary commission next Thursday after treading on the head of Lyon defender Dejan Lovren last month, while Ancelotti and Leonardo were both asked to explain comments they made about referee Clement Turpin following November's draw with Montpellier.

But Al Khelaifi, the figurehead of the club's owners Qatar Sports Investments, told L'Equipe: "Carlo is still one of the best coaches in the world. He is working very well, like Leonardo.

"I have an excellent relationship with each of them and there is an excellent relationship between them. Leo and Carlo are doing a good job even though they sometimes make mistakes, which is only human.

"Everybody has conducted their own self-assessment, at team level and at the level of the club generally, to realise the mistakes we have made."
