Marseille want to make Barton loan permanent

January 07, 2013

Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo has praised Joey Barton and suggested the Ligue 1 club would be interested in keeping the midfielder beyond his season-long loan from QPR.

‘He was described as an animal, but he is just the opposite. He is funny, intelligent and fights for victory,’ said Anigo.

‘We can see that the team has been lifted by his competitive spirit. He is now established as a leader in our group.

‘He is very happy here, maybe he has found the right club for him. Should he desire [to stay] it could be very good.’

The former Manchester City and Newcastle man has featured 12 times for Marseille this season, scoring once in their 2-2 Europa League draw against Borussia Monchengladbach, but was forced to wait until November for his Ligue 1 debut after being forced to serve the 12-match ban he received for his antics in QPR’s final game of last season.

And while the Hoops appear to want Barton as far away from Loftus Road as possible, the 30-year-old seems to have found a friend in Anigo.
