AS Roma reveal plan for new stadium

January 02, 2013

Roma say they hope to move into a new stadium in the south-west of Rome within the next four years.

The Serie A club - who currently share the publicly-owned Stadio Olympia with city rivals Lazio - want to move to their own ground in order to boost revenue.

They will become only the second club in the Italian top flight to own their stadium, with Juventus having constructed a 41,000-seat home after deciding that they no longer wanted to share the Stadio delle Alpi with Torino.

The use of publicly-owned stadia in Italy means clubs are unable to boost their revenues from stadium facilities including restaurants and megastores in the same way as those elsewhere in Europe such as Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

Roma, now owned by US investors, say their new home will have a capacity of between 55,000 and 60,000.

"It's been a long process but, from the new ownership point of view, we've been working on it for the last year," Roma President James Pallotta said. "It shows our belief in Italy and the Italian economy."

The club currently raises less than 20% of its revenues from matchday receipts. That will change when construction of the stadium, expected to employ around 1,000 people over 24 months, is completed.

"The fact that a stadium will be built thanks to the efforts of American ownership is a powerful message for the marketing of our city," Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno said.
