Brendan Rodgers wants Steven Gerrard to stay at Liverpool for life.
The Anfield boss has revealed he is ready to offer his inspirational skipper a new contract, to ensure he is there in the crucial early years of the Reds Revolution.
England star Gerrard has only 16 months left on his contract, and at 32, there has been a question mark left dangling over the question of a renewal, with the club’s owners keen to promote youth.
In the mind of Rodgers though, there is clearly no doubt, as he insisted the midfielder will definitely get a new deal, such is his importance to the young team being created at Anfield.
“He is vital to us, and I recognise that. I know he has 16 months left on his contract, but I would want him to go beyond that for this club and this team,” the manager explained.
“He has been an inspirational captain for us, he has been a huge figure in the development of this team. We are improving, we are growing, and he has influenced that.
“Absolutely I would want him to stay beyond his current contract and extend it - there is absolutely no question about that.”
Under their American owners, Liverpool have made a clear policy shift, in placing the emphasis on youth.
They have yet to sign a player over the age of 24, and have moved on older players like Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt.
Yet Rodgers is absolutely adamant that his captain can defy the march of time to keep playing at the top level beyond next season...which means he would play on for the Reds until at least the age of 35.
“What I would say with Steven is he has a real hunger to succeed. He may be 32 years of age, but he’s still got so much left,” the manager added.
“He applies himself right, he eats well, he recovers well, he works well, he does everything right. This is a guy who has led his life right as a football player and that allows you to play well into your 30s.
“Look, has played every minute of every league game for us which shows what an incredible figure for us he is, and it is huge credit to him and his quality.”
