Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat to Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday not only means José Mourinho's side must win the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu - it also took Madrid's total number of defeats in all competitions this season to six, equalling the number of games Madrid lost in Mourinho's first season, 2010-11, and one defeat more than during the entire 2011-12 campaign.
Madrid have now lost once in the Copa del Rey (1-2 to Celta), once in the Supercopa de España (2-3 to Barcelona), once in the Champions League (1-2 to Borussia Dortmund) and three times in the league (1-2 to Getafe, 0-1 to Sevilla and 0-1 to Real Betis), all in just 26 games, more defeats than they managed in 58 games in 2011-12, and the same number of defeats they managed over 59 games in 2010-11.
In 2010-11, two of Madrid's six defeats came against Barcelona (0-5 in the league in the Camp Nou and 0-2 in the Bernabéu in the Champions League) while another defeat came in a meaningless Copa del Rey second leg game with Levante, which they lost 2-0, having won the first leg 8-0. The other defeats in that season were against Osasuna (0-1) in Pamplona, and at home to Sporting Gijón (0-1) and Real Zaragoza (2-3), results that ended their slim hopes of winning the title.
Three of Madrid's five defeats in 2011-12 came against Barcelona (2-3 in the Copa del Rey, 1-3 in the league and 1-2 in the Copa del Rey Quarter Final first leg), while the other two were against Levante (0-1 in the league) and Bayern Munich (1-2 in the Champions League semi-final first leg).
