Phil Jones: Last season's Champions League exit "was a bitter pill to swallow"

December 03, 2012

Manchester United defender Phil Jones admitted that failing to reach the knockout stages of last season's UEFA Champions League was 'tough to deal with.'

Twelve months ago, United finished third in their group behind section winners Benfica and Basel who took four points from their meetings with the Red Devils.

Matters have improved dramatically this time around, with the Premier League leaders having already secured top spot ahead of their final group game against CFR Cluj of Romania on Wednesday.

But speaking about United's elimination in December last year, Jones said: "It was a bitter pill to swallow.

"For a club of Manchester United's stature it was not an easy thing to deal with.

"This club is used to being in the semi-finals and finals of the Champions League and even winning it, so it was not a nice feeling to get knocked out the way we did.

"But we've bounced back incredibly well this season.

"The lads have played some terrific stuff and hopefully we can kick on and go as far as we can."
