Phil Jones bemoans the timing of return

December 01, 2012

PHIL JONES accepts there is nothing he can do about the timing of his injuries — or his return to fitness!

The Manchester United centre-back made his first start of the season against Galatasaray last week after knee and back problems had kept him on the sidelines.

During that time United’s defensive resources were so stretched that Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia were forced to fill in at the back.

Now, with Chris Smalling and skipper Nemanja Vidic also ready to return from injury, Jones faces the prospect of a place on the bench despite being fully fit.

He said: “That’s football. It’s swings and roundabouts with injuries.

“It’s amazing how quickly you can be up there one minute and then down there. Everyone knows that.

“I’ve just got to knuckle down, train well and when I get the chance perform well.

“I feel fit and strong. Obviously I haven’t played a lot of minutes yet.

“But I felt good in the game I have had, and it was quite a difficult one to come back into.

“It is going to take a while to get my match fitness back but hopefully I can pick up some more minutes as the season progresses.”

United travel to Reading on Saturday knowing a win will keep them top of the league with a place in the Champions League knockout stages already secured.

Jones said: “We are playing well, passing the ball well and creating chances.

“Hopefully the clean sheet against West Ham will spur us on to have more of them.

“It’s nice for all of us to be sat top of the league and qualified for the European knockout stages.

“We are in a great position. Hopefully we can kick on from here.”
