Narrow derby win over Saint Etienne pleases Lyon boss Remi Garde

December 10, 2012

Lyon boss Remi Garde was delighted his undermanned side "got the job done" at derby rivals St Etienne last night but was quick to stress it was too early to get carried away with talk of the Ligue 1 title.

Les Gones overcame Mouhamadou Dabo's 55th-minute dismissal to win at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday courtesy of Michel Bastos' brilliant free-kick 10 minutes later.

St Etienne's gameplan fell apart thereafter and the numbers were levelled up with the dismissal of Les Verts substitute Alejandro Alonso.

"We didn't play our best match tonight, we struggled in the second half but we managed to get away with a narrow win," Garde told the club's official website.

The win moved Lyon five points clear at the top of the table after Marseille were surprisingly beaten 3-0 at home by Lorient.

Garde added: "My team likes to play, and there's a lot of joy tonight even though we're not getting carried away.

"We don't want to underplay things either, but there are still lots of matches to play this season. It's really a huge joy to win here, especially after a week in which we won our two matches.

"You have to savour a derby win. The players love preparing for these matches, and playing them. We got the job done without completely dominating."

Lyon face another big week as they host Nancy on Wednesday night before a trip to big-spending Paris St Germain, who are second, next weekend.

"The three points were good but we need to validate them against Nancy," said Garde.

"We are advancing slowly and we are not even thinking about the Parc des Princes."
