Manchester City star David Silva out of Champions League clash with Dortmund

December 04, 2012

Midfielder David Silva has been ruled out of Manchester City's Champions League game at Borussia Dortmund and could miss Sunday's Manchester derby.

The 26-year-old has not travelled to Germany for the game at Signal Iduna Park as he has a hamstring injury.

City will also be without suspended midfielder Yaya Toure on Tuesday.

Aleksandar Kolarov joined City's injury list after limping off against Everton at the weekend, while fellow full-back Gael Clichy has an ankle problem.

However, midfielder Jack Rodwell has travelled to Germany after returning to training following a hamstring injury.

The loss of Silva, 26, for this weekend's important Premier League clash against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium would be a big blow for City as they look to close the three-point gap between themselves and the Red Devils.

Roberto Mancini's men go into Tuesday's match knowing they have no chance of making the Champions League last 16, their record of three draws and two defeats having left them bottom of Group D with just three points.

They now face a battle to claim the compensation of a Europa League place for finishing third in the group.

With Dortmund and Real Madrid having already qualified from the group, City need to beat the German champions and hope third-placed Ajax fail to win at the home of the Spanish title-holders.

Mancini says he is not worried about his team lacking motivation given they no longer have a chance of advancing in the Champions League.

He said: "We will try, but we need to win in Dortmund and it will not be easy because Dortmund are in a good condition.

"There is the Premier League, and the Europa League if we can go in it, and also the FA Cup. The season is long and it is important."

Mancini is also hoping his team can finally rediscover the form that saw them claim a first top-flight league title in 44 years last season.

"We played very well at Chelsea [where they drew 1-1] and didn't win. We played well in the second half at Wigan [a 2-0 victory]. We are in good form at the moment," said the Italian.

Mancini, who was booed by City fans for taking off top scorer Carlos Tevez in Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Everton, will not have his assistant David Platt with him on the sidelines on Tuesday.

Platt was suspended by Uefa for two matches for improper conduct at the game against Real Madrid.

Borussia Dortmund have a number of injury concerns for the game.

Captain Sebastian Kehl missed their 1-1 weekend draw with Bayern Munich with a knee problem and defender Neven Subotic was taken off during the game with a groin injury. Sven Bender played despite not being 100% fit.

"Neven is a beast so I hope it's nothing serious. You have to be impressed with how Sven Bender played," said Dortmund manager Juergen Klopp after the Bayern match.

"I am happy that we already qualified for the round of 16. We will have to see who we can send out onto the pitch. This phase is pretty tough for everyone."
